Iron Coast

Two bases on one painted coast, a river and two bridges between them, the bay open to gunboats. Build on your side, keep your oil trucks busy, raise an army and take the other base down, against the computer at three levels.

How to play

Destroy every building on the other side before they destroy yours.

The coast

Your base is on the near side of the river, theirs across it. Two bridges cross the river, and the bay is open to gunboats. What nobody has seen yet is under fog; a building you saw once stays on your map as you saw it.

Building

Your headquarters puts up the buildings, one at a time: tap a card under Base to start one; when it’s ready, tap it again and put it down on open ground near your other buildings (a dock goes on the water). Power plants make power; when you use more than you make, everything is made at half speed. A card that can’t be made yet says what it needs first.

Oil and credits

A refinery comes with an oil truck. Oil trucks fill up at an oil field and sell the oil at the nearest refinery; more trucks, more credits. Everything is paid for when you start it; take it off the list (a right click, or a long press on a touch screen) and you get it all back.

Your army

The barracks trains riflemen and rocket teams; the factory makes scouts, tanks, heavy tanks, helicopters and oil trucks; the dock makes gunboats. Riflemen are best against riflemen, rockets against tanks and helicopters, tanks against tanks. Only rockets and turrets hit a helicopter. A turret fires at whatever comes near it.

Orders

Pick a unit with a click or a tap, several with a box (drag with the mouse; on a touch screen, a long press then a drag), and every one of a kind in view with a double click. Then click or tap the ground to send them there, or something of theirs to attack it; an oil truck sent onto an oil field goes back to work. While units are picked, the bar under the view has Attack (then tap where to go: they fight whatever they meet on the way), Stop (they stop, and still go after an enemy that comes near), Hold (they stay put and fire at whatever comes in range, never chasing it) and Fall back (to your headquarters); a right click or Esc lets them go.

Repairs

Pick one of your buildings and tap Repair under the view: it mends a twentieth of itself a second, paid as it goes (half of what it cost, for all of it), until it’s whole or you tap Repair again. A badly hit power plant makes less power until it’s mended. Pick damaged vehicles and tap Repair: they drive to your nearest factory (a gunboat to your nearest dock) and are mended there, a twelfth a second, paid as they go (half of what they cost, for all of it); whole again, they wait there for orders, and an oil truck goes back to work. Infantry can’t be repaired.

Rally and selling

Pick a barracks, a factory or a dock, tap Rally, then tap the ground: what it makes from then on goes there (a helicopter flies straight to it), and a flag shows the spot while the building is picked. Pick a building and tap Sell, then Sell again within 3 seconds: you get back half of what it cost (less if it’s damaged), and it’s gone. The headquarters can’t be sold.

The view

Move it with ↑ ← ↓ → or W A S D, the mouse at the view’s edge, a drag on a touch screen, or a tap on the small map; the mouse wheel zooms.

Levels

The computer plays at three levels: from Easy to Hard its oil brings more, it builds faster, and it attacks sooner and with more.

Controls

A click or a tap picks and sends, a drag draws a box, a right click lets go, ↑ ← ↓ → and W A S D move the view, the wheel zooms. Ctrl + 1 to 9 keeps the units picked as a group (⌘ on a Mac), 1 to 9 picks that group again, and the number twice quickly takes the view to it. Space plays and pauses, Enter plays, Esc lets go of what you picked (or pauses). The speaker turns the sound and the voices on or off.

Your level, how many games you’ve won and lost, and the game in play are kept in this browser: a game comes back paused.
