How to play

Leave the other side without a move: take all its pieces, or block the ones it has left.

The board

Eight by eight, and every square is in play. Each side has sixteen men on its second and third rows; the first and last rows start empty. White moves first.

Men

A man moves one square forward or sideways, never back and never diagonally. It takes the same way: over an enemy piece right next to it, onto the empty square beyond.

The dama

A man that reaches the far row becomes a dama at the end of its move. A dama moves any distance along a row or a column, and takes an enemy piece anywhere along its line when the square beyond is empty, landing on any empty square past it.

Taking

Taking is a must, and you must take the most pieces you can; a man and a dama count the same. A piece can keep taking in one move, and each piece taken leaves the board at once. A piece never turns straight back the way it came between two takes. A man that reaches the far row in the middle of a take finishes it as a man.

The end

You win when the other side can’t move: all its pieces are taken, or the ones left are blocked. A game is drawn when each side has one piece left, after fifty moves each without a take, or when the same position comes back a third time.

The computer

Computer sets how well it plays (Medium to start). Easy looks two moves ahead and now and then picks a weaker move; Medium looks four moves ahead; Hard looks as far as it can in about a second and a half. Play as is White, Black or Random. Both can be changed at any time; during a game they are for the next one. Undo takes back your last move and the computer’s reply.

With a friend

Send a friend the link (Copy link) and play from two browsers. Who plays White is drawn at random for the first game, and you swap for each game after. Offer a draw and your friend can Accept or Decline; Resign gives the game up, against the computer too. Games won counts both sides’ wins, a draw half each.

Controls

Tap or drag a piece to move it. With Hints on, the pieces that must take are ringed, and a picked piece shows a dot on each square it can end on and its route. When two ways end on the same square, tap the square to go through on the way. Tap the piece again, or press Esc, to let it go.

A game against the computer is kept in this browser with its level and the games won, and comes back paused (it also pauses whenever you switch away from the page). A friend’s game goes through a small server that checks every move, and forgets the game a day after the last move.
